SWELL began in a cramped apartment in Fitzroy, where founder David Chen spent countless nights surrounded by towers of books, zines, and art catalogues. What started as a personal obsession with experimental literature and critical theory slowly evolved into something larger.
After years working in traditional publishing houses, David became frustrated with the industry's reluctance to take risks. Too many important voices were being silenced, too many experimental works were deemed "unmarketable." SWELL was born from this frustration – a space where challenging ideas could find their audience.
Melbourne's rich cultural landscape provided the perfect backdrop for SWELL's mission. The city's history of supporting independent arts, from its legendary music scene to its thriving gallery culture, created an environment where experimental publishing could flourish.
